County Councillor views Ipswich station improvements

Monday, 16 June 2014

Suffolk County Councillor, Graham Newman, is to officially launch a new nationwide cycle hire scheme at Ipswich rail station.

With the summer season just around the corner, travellers using Ipswich station can discover the sights on two wheels thanks to Abellio Greater Anglia’s new ‘Bike and Go’ initiative, the UK’s first major station cycle hire programme, which offers rail passengers the opportunity to hire a bike at their local station for an onward journey.

Councillor Graham Newman, Cabinet Member for Roads, Transport and Planning, will meet Abellio Greater Anglia representatives to officially launch the pioneering new scheme at Ipswich rail station on Tuesday 17th June at 3pm.

Providing low cost, rapid and convenient cycle rental, Bike & Go will be available at 15 stations operated by Abellio Greater Anglia to offer rail passengers greater choice about how they make their door-to-door journeys and is modelled on the Dutch Railways OV-fiets station cycle hire scheme.

The cycles are high quality and registration costs just £10 for the annual subscription, which is easily done via the website at: www.bikeandgo.co.uk, and the daily hire cost at £3.80 (less than the cost of many bus fares) is competitively priced.

Cllr Newman will view other improvements made by the train operator during his visit, including a deep clean of the station and a complete reorganization of the station’s cycle parking facilities.

Andrew Goodrum, Abellio Greater Anglia’s Customer Service Director, said, “Ipswich’s new Bike & Go facility will improve the service and choice that we provide for our customers who are keen to cycle to and from their local station. Competitively priced and easy to use, Bike & Go complements other investments we are making to improve cycle parking with more secure facilities and new Cycle Points, offering a greener and healthier travel choice for our customers.”

Councillor Graham Newman, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for roads and transport, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Abellio Greater Anglia and are hugely encouraged by their positive approach to, and generous investment in, cycling.

“Suffolk is a superb county for cycling, most of its hills are relatively shallow and its countryside outstanding. Many studies have shown that cycling to and from work is a positive step to better health and well-being. It brings with it the benefit of huge money saving, a much reduced carbon footprint, and a reduction in congestion for those who are obliged to use public transport or their private cars.

“Combining a train ride to a principle station like Ipswich, with a cycle ride from there to your office, is the ideal way to start your day! - and Abellio Greater Anglia has just made it so much easier."
