Rail passengers in Essex are set to benefit from improved cycle facilities after the Department for Transport awarded more than £300,000 to Abellio Greater Anglia.

The funding has been announced as part of a £15m investment around the country from the Cycle Rail Fund Scheme.

A total of £18,000 will be spent on increasing cycle parking and enhancing lighting and CCTV at Stansted Mountfitchet station, which is managed by Abellio Greater Anglia.

The initiative was backed by Essex County Council, which funded 10pc of the scheme.

Paul Oxley, Abellio Greater Anglia's Stakeholder Manager, said: "We are very pleased to have received funding for all of the bids we submitted to the DfT. These funds will enable us to provide additional cycle parking to some of our popular stations for cyclists on our network and extra security to some of our pre-existing facilities.

"These bids would not have been possible were it not for third party funding from our local authority partner, Essex County Council and we are very thankful for their support."
