MP Norman Lamb visits Norwich rail station for Bike Week

Thursday, 12 June 2014

MP for North Norfolk and keen cyclist, Norman Lamb, will visit Norwich station on Monday as part of National Bike Week.

The MP, who campaigns to make create better access to North Norfolk for cyclists, will view Abellio Greater Anglia’s recently opened hire scheme, “Cycle Station”, and meet Jonathan Denby, the train operator’s Head of Corporate Affairs, when he drops in to Norwich station on Monday 16th June at 07.20am.

The visit is just ones of thousands of events taking part in Norfolk and across the UK as part of National Bike Week which runs from 14-22nd June 2014.

National Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this be for fun, as a means of getting around to the local shops, school, the library or just to visit friends.

As the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK, Bike Week encourages over half a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around.

The aims of Bike Week reflect those of Abellio Greater Anglia, who have won awards for their commitment to improving facilities for cyclists and encouraging cycling as a means of getting to and from the rail station.

Jonathan Denby, Abellio Greater Anglia’s Head of Corporate Affairs, commented: “We are delighted to support Bike Week. Improving sustainable transport options to and from the rail station are at the heart of our vision for the region’s rail services, reflected in the commitment we have shown in developing innovative new cycle hire schemes such as Cycle Station and Bike & Go and the thousands of additional cycle racks and secure cycle compounds we have installed at rail stations across the network.”

MP Norman Lamb commented, “I am very pleased to launch National Bike Week at Norwich station where the local railway operator Abellio Greater Anglia has introduced a ‘Cycle Station’ where bikes can be hired by booking on line. At Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft stations on the Wherry Lines there are ‘Bike and Go’ schemes where bikes can be hired from the stations for under £4 a day using a simple on line booking system. Up to 4 bikes can also be carried on local trains, so you can enjoy a combined bike and train day out across the countryside, coasts and communities of Norfolk.

“These initiatives are helping to enable a real revolution on wheels where sustainable travel and healthy exercise can be combined offering benefit to users and the County as a whole. I’m delighted to see the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership and Abellio Greater Anglia working together to make cycling such an attractive option in our county."
