Rail has overtaken bus and coach as the preferred method of travel to/from London Stansted Airport for the last quarter of 2015, figures reveal.

The data, released by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), shows that the modal share for rail travel to the airport was 28.59% (up 3.6% on the previous quarter) whilst the proportion using the bus or coach was 26.26%.

Stansted Airport now attracts around 23 million visitors annually with Stansted Express passenger numbers up 20% in 2015 (exceeding the rate of growth at the airport) to almost 5 million - with the train operator’s range of low cost Advance offer fares and fast, frequent services cited as the reasons that people choose to travel to Stansted Airport by rail.

Stansted Express is the fastest and most comfortable way to travel between central London and the Airport. Journey time to/from Liverpool Street is just 47 minutes or 36 minutes from Tottenham Hale and the train station at the airport is directly under the airport terminal, just a 2 minute walk to check-in.

With trains every 15 minutes between London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport, Stansted Express not only offers customers a frequent service, but also travel on one of the most modern train fleets in the country, which include free Wi-fi, unlimited luggage allowance, free charge points and an at seat trolley service of drinks and snacks.

Abellio Greater Anglia’s Commercial Director, Andy Camp, commented, “It’s great news that the fast, frequent Stansted Express services and range of good value, innovative fares is attracting modal shift to rail as passenger numbers at Stansted Airport continue to increase.”
