The Bittern and Wherry lines smartphone app has been short listed for a Community Rail Award.

The Bittern and Wherry Lines ‘app’, launched just a few short months ago, has been nominated for the Best Marketing Publication Award. It is the first smartphone ‘app’ made available by a Community Rail Partnership (and the first for any branch line on the UK rail network). Free to download for both Android and i-Phone, it enables rail users to find all the information needed for a journey, by train and bus, from each station on the Bittern and Wherry Lines, and to explore the surrounding area.

Developed with a local company, Pocket Places, the app provides maps for each station, information on connecting transport (including walking and cycling), local attractions and on-line ticket purchase.

The development of the app has been supported by: Community Rail Norfolk, Norfolk County Council, Broadland District Council, North Norfolk District Council, the Designated Community Rail Development Fund and Greater Anglia.

Geraint Hughes Greater Anglia’s Partnerships Manager: “The Bittern and Wherry Lines app is an archetype to which all Community Rail Partnerships should aspire to; it is at the forefront of the marketing of community rail lines and a great asset to commuters and tourists alike, providing them with joined-up travel and leisure information. The Community Rail Awards are national awards which recognise excellence and promote best practice in community rail development, to be short listed for this award is a great accomplishment.”

The Community Rail Awards will be held on 28 September at the STEAM museum, Swindon.
