Local residents and community groups are being urged to come forward and play a part in making their local rail station a centre of community activity and a beautiful focal point.

Greater Anglia and parent company Abellio are looking for enthusiastic individuals or groups to get involved in varied initiatives such as gardening, planting, station audits and promoting the local rail service through their Station Adopter Scheme at the stations between Braintree and Witham.

All around the Greater Anglia network, volunteers are working with great success on initiatives such as planting, community art projects, railway walks leaflets and in one area, a community café! Helping to put the railway back at the heart of the community.

The Flitch Line runs from Braintree to Witham and serves the local communities of Braintree Freeport, Cressing and White Notley also. Adopters in this area are also supported by the Essex and South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership who promote a wide range of events including special Santa and Halloween trains and work to increase community involvement in local rail issues. Volunteers looking to support these stations are welcomed as are their ideas and suggestions for improving the customer experience at their station.

Sarah Swanston, Area Customer Service Manager says,

“Our volunteers are a very valuable part of the railway, they act as the eyes and ears of our stations and help make our them attractive and a pleasure to use. Whether you’re an individual or a group, we’d love to get you on board. So, come and get involved in planting some hanging baskets or maybe provide some feedback on the station and make your station the heart of your community.”.
