More than 226,000 people in East Anglia travelled for free by using Groupsave on Greater Anglia trains last year, the company has revealed.

Sales of its ‘Groupsave’ ticket – which give a third off off-peak fares for groups of 3 to 9 people, meaning every third person travels for free – totalled 677,550 in 2018.

In addition over 240,000 people saved by buying a heavily discounted ‘Advance’ fare.

These offer one way journeys from as little as £5, a huge saving on standard walk up rail fares.

This means that together almost half a million people in the eastern region made savings on their rail journeys in 2018.

Greater Anglia’s Commercial and Customer Services Director, Martin Moran, said, “Our great value fares mean that more people can sit back and relax as they beat the traffic and save money.

“We offer a range of discounted fares to encourage more people to travel by rail, whatever their budget.

“By taking advantage of Groupsave or by planning ahead and bagging an online Advance fare at greateranglia.co.uk, there are great savings to be had on days out, shopping and visiting friends and family.”

Advance tickets are released for booking around three months in advance on Greater Anglia’s website, but you can even buy them up to 10 minutes before departure if there are any still available.

Deals to be grabbed include:

  • Southend to London – just £5 one way
  • Norwich / Ipswich / Colchester to London – just £10 one way
  • Cambridge to London – just £7 one way

To give families a helping hand, children can travel for just £2 return anywhere on the network with no need to book in advance.

And they can save even more with Greater Anglia’s two-for-the-price-of-one offers on over 150 attractions around the region, including some of London’s top days out such as ZSL London Zoo, London Dungeon, Madame Tussauds, Hampton Court Palace and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

Greater Anglia has also introduced a new fares “Price Promise” (guaranteeing the best price possible if customers book via the Greater Anglia website or app, or refunding the difference if they find the same ticket cheaper elsewhere) and a Best Fare Finder, which allows customers to find the cheapest Advance fares available over a 5 day period.
