Rail passengers in Suffolk are advised to check before they travel as engineering works are due to start on the Ipswich – Lowestoft line for nine days from 29 July.

Network Rail is carrying out major track renewal work and, as a result, the line will be closed between Ipswich and Halesworth from Saturday 29 July until Sunday 6 August, with buses operating in place of trains between these stations. Trains will still run between Halesworth and Lowestoft.

In response to feedback from customers, Greater Anglia will operate ‘fast’ buses to Halesworth for connections to Lowestoft, and ‘stopping’ buses which will call at all stations from Ipswich to Saxmundham. This is to speed up journey times and provide more capacity. Greater Anglia staff will be available at Ipswich, Halesworth, Saxmundham and Woodbridge to guide people to the correct buses.

Additionally, buses will operate between Ipswich and Felixstowe from 20.50 on Saturday 29 July and all day on Sunday 30 July and from 20.50 on Saturday 5 and all day on Sunday 6 August. Trains will operate on this line throughout the week as normal.

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia Managing Director, said: “We are sorry that our customers will be inconvenienced while Network Rail completes this engineering work. Ultimately it will help us to run a more reliable, on time railway and make customers’ journeys better. While the engineering work is going on, we will make sure that our customers are still able to complete their journeys, even if part of it is by bus.”

Customers should check before they travel on www.greateranglia.co.uk or the Greater Anglia app .
