Love was in the air at Norwich station yesterday when station staff gave away 2,000 Valentine’s cupcakes to passengers on their morning commute.

And the big-hearted passengers responded in kind by donating to the British Heart Foundation – raising over £250.

Volunteer John Palmer, who is celebrating his quarter century fundraising for the charity said, “I’m very grateful to Greater Anglia and their customers who supported us yesterday and gave so generously.”

Andrew Goodrum, Greater Anglia’s Customer Service Director, said: “The giveaway was to thank passengers for their custom and let them know that our staff are always there to help make life a little easier, but I’m delighted to see that the team at Norwich went the extra mile and added another dimension to the event that has helped raise money locally for this very worthy cause.”

12,000 cupcakes were given out at stations including Broxbourne, Harlow Town, Audley End, Cambridge, Shenfield, Chelmsford, Ipswich and Norwich.

Photos were shared across social networking using the hashtag #sharetheGAlove with one passenger tweeting: “I think I just had the best commute of my life…people genuinely couldn’t believe that they were being given something for free no strings attached!” and another said “Your driver on the 06.18 from Witham is amazing. He just wished everyone a happy Valentine’s Day, gave us a weather forecast and wished us all a lovely day. Made a lot of people smile including me.”
