New research from Greater Anglia has revealed that more than a fifth of people are not aware of the various train ticket types available, with travellers potentially losing out on significant savings as a result.

Of those surveyed*, 2 in 5 people were similarly unaware of the available special ticket offers, which range from savings of more than 30% on group travel, to journeys into the capital from just £10.

For those looking for great value rail tickets, there are a range of special options designed to make train travel on Greater Anglia more affordable than ever.

“There’s some great opportunities for travellers across the region to save money,” said Martin Moran, Greater Anglia Commercial Director. “With our research showing that around two thirds of travellers have never used a special ticket offer, we are urging people to spend just a little time researching the best train ticket for their travel needs, and to take advantage of the many deals available.”

To make the decision-making process easier, Greater Anglia has identified the top three money-savers for savvy train travellers looking for the best value:

Group Save

Planning a day out with friends or family? Take advantage of GroupSave and get 1/3 off all fares for groups of three to nine adults travelling together Off-Peak. Available online or at any station across the Greater Anglia network. For even greater savings on trips to the capital, it can be combined with the network’s London 2FOR1 offers on top attractions, museums, galleries and famous landmarks as well as discounted eating out and entertainment.

Advance Fares

By purchasing an Advance ticket, you can choose the best time to travel at the lowest available fare. Available up to three months before travel, you can sign up to Advance Alerts to be one of the first to know when tickets go on sale, enabling you to plan for an upcoming day out or trip away.

Tickets are priced as single leg fares so you can choose the lowest available price for each leg of your journey and start from just £10 one way on intercity services, from £7 one way from Cambridge and from £5 one way from Southend.

Off Peak Returns

If you’re planning to travel outside of busy commuter times then Greater Anglia’s range of Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak tickets can offer great savings.

The Off-peak Return is valid on the date shown for the outward journey, but offers a month’s window for the return, perfect for a longer trip. For London journeys, they also allow for completion of late evening returns, with validity until 04.30 the next morning, so you don’t have to worry about staying out after hours.

Other options include the Off-Peak Day Return which has no p.m. restrictions from London, and the Super Off-Peak Day Return which has p.m. restrictions but offers even greater value - allowing for complete flexibility for all budgets when travelling by rail.
