Revised timetables for services between Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft while Network Rail carry out 23 days of works to complete the modernisation of the signalling system are now available on the Greater Anglia website.

The phased programme of work is due to start on 1 February and continue until 24 February, when brand new modern signalling – replacing a Victorian semaphore system – will be switched on.

The work will take part in stages, with a rail replacement bus service operating as follows:

  • Saturday 1 February to Sunday 2 February – rail replacement bus service between Norwich and Yarmouth
  • Monday 3 February to Sunday 16 February – rail replacement bus service between Norwich and Yarmouth, Norwich and Lowestoft and Beccles and Lowestoft
  • Monday 17 February to Sunday 23 February – rail replacement bus service between Norwich and Lowestoft

For details of revised train and bus times, check the “service alterations” section of the Greater Anglia website and select the appropriate travel date.

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, said: “We apologise in advance to customers for the inconvenience this long period of works causes.

“We will make sure that everyone is still able to complete their journey, even if part of it is by bus.

“The work is an important part of the transformation and modernisation of the railway in this part of our network, and should lead to a much more reliable service for our customers.”

Once the work is complete, Berney Arms station, which has been closed since Autumn 2018, will re-open.

The small station, which is accessible only by rail, boat or on foot, is popular with hikers and bird spotters.
