With joyous yips and choruses that explode like tickertape parades, the New York indie-rockers have trampolined onto the contemporary music scene. The release of their 2008 self-titled debut album carved a new niche in the guitar genre with a jittering sound influenced by Afrobeat and ska. Frontman Ezra Koenig's lyrics whorl around the mouth like a spinning top and the band's multi-instrumentalist Rostam Batmanglij lets his fingers play high-speed hopscotch on his fret board to create their inimitable riffs. With their second album Contra, the four-piece have stayed true to their kooky roots whilst exploring the connection between songwriting and production. The result is a self-produced collection of songs, conceived in a shoebox-sized studio Brooklyn, that confirms the band's ambition and experimentation with references to computer games and Mexican hangover cures. A successful string of festival performances have allowed Vampire Weekend to reach audiences on a grand scale - something which can only continue with their biggest headline tour to date.
