National Army Museum - Alfred Munnings: War Artist, 1918
Exhibition Dates: 30 November 2018 - 3 March 2019
Sir Alfred Munnings was one of Britain's most celebrated equine artists. This exhibition brings together over 40 original paintings from his time on the Western Front with the Canadian Expeditionary Force; the artwork that led to his admittance to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1919.
Displayed together in England for the first time in a century, these impressionist paintings cover portraiture, pastoral landscapes and equine subjects, and highlight the role of horses in military operations.
Often painting less than a mile from the front line, and in full view of the enemy, Munnings shows war horses on the march, at the charge, at work and at rest, capturing the beauty of these animals in the war-affected landscapes of France.
His paintings give an insight into the men and horses of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and the Canadian Forestry Corps, demonstrating both the important role of mounted troops on the Western Front and the vital work behind the lines that sustained the war effort.
This exhibition includes paintings on loan from the Canadian War Museum, as well as selected works from the National Army Museum’s own collection.
The exhibition has been developed by the Canadian War Museum (Ottawa, Canada), in partnership with The Munnings Art Museum (Dedham, UK) and generously supported by The Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation.
Local support kindly provided by Juddmonte.
