Cycles on trains

There is a set number of full-size bikes allowed on our trains, depending on the type of train in service. At Stratford, Liverpool Street and Cambridge stations no full-size bikes are allowed on some trains arriving or departing at the busiest times. More details are in the table below.

There is no limit on the number of folding bikes allowed on our trains, but please fold it before boarding. Please stow it in baggage space if possible and make sure it doesn’t obstruct the aisle or door. When you arrive at your destination, please do not obstruct other passengers when you unfold it.

Never put bikes of any sort in the wheelchair area, please. This area must always be kept clear for our customers using wheelchairs.

When can’t I take my full-size bike on a train to or from Stratford, Liverpool Street or Cambridge stations?

Cambridge No full-size bikes are allowed on trains arriving between 07.45- 08.45 Monday to Fridays (not including bank holidays).
London Liverpool Street No full-size bikes are allowed on trains arriving between 07.45-09.45 (Monday-Friday) or
departing between 16.30-18.30 (Monday-Friday)
Except for intercity services, as long as you have a cycle reservation.
Stratford No full-size bikes are allowed on trains arriving between 07.45-09.45 (Monday-Friday) or
departing between 16.30-18.30 (Monday-Friday)

Can I reserve a space for my bike on your trains?

You can reserve a bike space on our intercity service between Norwich, Diss, Stowmarket, Ipswich, Manningtree, Colchester, Chelmsford, Stratford and London Liverpool Street. Call our customer relations team on 0345 600 7245 and select option 8. Please provide 24 hours’ notice. Spaces are allocated on a first come first served basis.

Bicycle reservations are not available on any of our other services.

Sorry, no full size bikes are allowed on the Stansted Express service at any time.

Great Eastern main line commuter services (Ipswich, Colchester, Clacton, Walton-on-the-Naze, Harwich, Southend Victoria, Southminister - London Liverpool Street)

4* bikes for every 4 carriages on our older trains or 4* bikes for every 5 carriages on our newer trains.

Our new trains have dedicated bike spaces – look for the green stripe on the side of the carriage to see where to get on.
If you’re taking a bike on an old train, please do not block doorways.

On rail replacement buses

Sorry, we are unable to take full-size bikes (or e-scooters) on rail replacement buses, but our bus operators will allow you take a folding bike.
