A railway for you - It's happening
It's an exciting time for our region's railways. We're in the process of delivering a major transformation across the network, with a £1.4 billion investment in improvements to our services. That means new trains, more frequent services and more capacity. It will also lead to faster journey times on some routes.
You've told us what you want from your railway. And we're responding. Over the next couple of years, you'll experience a service that's completely reformed, revitalised and regenerated. Here are just some of the major innovations you can expect to see:
New trains and more seats
We’re investing in a complete fleet of new trains – the process is already well advanced, with our new regional, intercity and Stansted Express trains all now in service. Over half of our new suburban trains are also now in operation, with many more trains entering service over the next year, so that by the middle of 2023 all of our services should be operated by new trains. In total, there’ll be 191 trains – that’s 1043 new carriages. The trains are all longer than the trains they replace with more seats. Most of the fleet is made up of electric trains, but for the regional routes where there’s mostly no overhead power, our new, more energy efficient, diesel/electric bi-mode trains provide the flexibility to operate on all areas of the network and switch from one power source to the other as necessary, using electric power where available and changing easily to diesel where appropriate.
Faster and more frequent services
We've already reduced journey times on some Norwich to London services (and we will look to reintroduce a Norwich in 90 and Ipswich in 60 service in 2023, if possible), while the continued roll out of new suburban trains will result in thousands of extra seats for weekday commuters. We'll also be looking at future opportunities for more frequent services, once all the new trains are in place, where there is the potential demand and where the necessary rail infrastructure is in place to facilitate them.
And that's not all...
There are many other improvements to look forward to, including new station shops and cafés, as well as more car and cycle parking spaces.
