“Gum Busters” are being used at Greater Anglia stations to clear up dried-up chewing gum from platforms and concourses.

The machine operator uses the nozzle at the end of the hose to brush away the remains of the gum.

Greater Anglia’s cleaning contractors, Carlisle Cleaning Services, are using six machines across the network to clear up discarded gum.

All mainline stations are completely cleared of gum four times a year.

Simone Bailey, Greater Anglia Asset Management Director said: “Chewing gum might keep your breath fresh and your teeth sparkling clean, but if it’s dropped onto the ground at our stations, it makes a horrible mess.

“The gum busters do a great job of clearing up dried up gum and making our stations look spick and span again.

“However, we would respectfully ask customers to use a bin to dispose of their gum – we have them at all of our stations.”

Alex Orr, Carlisle Support Services Contract Manager said: “The introduction of the Gum Buster machines into the Greater Anglia contract continues our focus on implementing innovative solutions to our valued client. It’s great to see that they have made visual improvements to the cleanliness standards across the network.”
