Work will soon start to create a new secure cycle compound and 100 extra cycle parking spaces at Billericay railway station.
The work is due to start later this month and will be finished by the end of the year.
Cyclists using the station will be able to choose to park their cycle in a new secure compound which will be accessible through the Greater Anglia app or open parking, which would suit ad-hoc users.
The project will cost around £300,000 and has been made possible with funding from the Department for Transport’s Cycle Rail Programme and Essex County Council.
Simone Bailey, Greater Anglia’s Asset Management Director, said: "We’re investing to improve cycle parking at Billericay station, and we would like to thank the Department for Transport and Essex County Council for their funding contributions.
"With more people choosing to live in our region and the increasing number of people choosing to cycle, we’re keen to expand our cycling facilities, especially as it helps people to minimise their carbon footprint for the entire length of their journeys."
Cllr Kevin Bentley, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure, Essex County Council, said: “We’re really pleased that the new cycling facilities at Billericay railway station will support local people to choose sustainable transport options that will not only improve their health, but also help to reduce congestion on Essex roads.
“We remain committed to ensuring that the county has the right infrastructure in place so that wherever possible sustainable travel is the first choice for all residents, particularly for short journeys and I look forward to continuing our work with partners to achieve a safer, greener and healthier Essex.”
Greater Anglia will also upgrade the lighting and CCTV at the station to further improve security.
