An Abellio Greater Anglia employee has been recognised at a British Transport Police (BTP) awards ceremony for her role in tackling railway crime and antisocial behaviour.

Waltham Cross Booking Office Clerk, Stella Emelone, was presented with a Divisional Commander’s Commendation by Chief Superintendent Paul Brogden on Friday 23rd May in a special ceremony held at Stationer’s Hall, London, along with Alba Turnbull, a member of the public who used to work at the station’s coffee shop.

Certificates of Commendation are the highest honour awarded to police officers, police community support officers (PCSOs), special constables, police staff, railway staff and members of the public who have shown special zeal, courage, skill and resourcefulness in the detection of crime or some other form of police work.

Chief Superintendent Paul Brogden said, “The fearless and selfless actions of both Stella and Alba undoubtedly saved a life. Under very difficult circumstances, both women showed courage and determination acting decisively to keep everyone safe.”

The incident took place on Monday 15th of April 2013 at Waltham Cross Station, where Miss Emelone noticed a female acting erratically on the station. Fearful that she may be suicidal, Miss Emelone approached the female and asked her to leave the station. The female refused and, as a fast train approached the station, she turned and walked toward the platform edge.

Fearing for the female’s safety, Miss Emelone attempted to prevent her from doing so and as a result was viciously attacked.

On witnessing the unprovoked attack, Miss Turnbull intervened to defend Miss Emelone, putting her own safety at risk but certainly prevented Miss Emelone from receiving potentially very serious injuries.

The female was arrested for assault and trespass when police arrived.

Jamie Burles, Abellio Greater Anglia Managing Director, said, “I am delighted that the courageous actions of Alba and Stella have been recognised with these honours and would like to thank Stella for her dedication to her role in going above and beyond the call of duty to provide assistance in a threatening situation. She is a great asset to the Abellio Greater Anglia Team.”
