Greater Anglia has today (24 November) advised passengers that, on Sunday 3 December, there will be very limited rail transport options in the Cambridge area, and parts of the wider region, due to strike action, action short of a strike and planned engineering work.

On that day there will be no Great Northern or Thameslink services from Cambridge due to industrial action. No rail replacement services will be available to cover those services.

In addition, due to industrial action and planned engineering work, Greater Anglia will only be able to operate an extremely limited service and, due to these constraints, it is expected that those Greater Anglia services which are running will be extremely busy.

With construction work for the new Cambridge South station taking place, the line will be closed between Audley End and Cambridge station all day.

Trains from London Liverpool Street to Cambridge will start/terminate at Audley End, connecting into limited rail replacement bus services to/from Cambridge North.

Passengers are advised to use the car parks at either Audley End or Cambridge North stations, but be aware that parking at these stations will be very limited, partially because of the space needed for rail replacement buses.

It is important to note that there will be no rail replacement buses from the main station in Cambridge - customers need to travel directly to Cambridge North or Audley End for London Liverpool Street. Passengers are asked to make their own way to/from Cambridge North, as the industrial action means there will be no rail shuttle service between Cambridge and Cambridge North.

Jamie Burles, Managing Director at Greater Anglia said:

“Due to a mixture of strikes, action short of strike, and planned engineering works, passengers are advised that, unfortunately, there will be major disruption to rail transport in the Cambridge area on December 3, with very few services able to operate and rail replacement buses in place between Cambridge North and Audley End.

“Parking at Audley End and Cambridge North will be very limited, and the connecting rail replacement bus services are expected to be very busy.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to passengers planning rail journeys on that day. We advise customers to plan ahead and check before they travel - passengers should expect services to be very busy and may wish to consider travelling on alternative dates.”

We also strongly advise that passengers check the journey planner before they travel as there may be last-minute changes to the service.
