Manningtree to Harwich
for Mistley, the bird reserves of the Stour Valley and the town, port and fort of Harwich
The southern banks of the Stour Estuary are rich in woodland and bird life, so sit back and enjoy this lovely countryside from the comfort of the train. Be charmed by the narrow streets of Manningtree, with its resident colony of swans, before heading off through Mistley. Your train passes right along the edge of the RSPB Stour Estuary Reserve, so keep your binoculars at the ready for sight of dunlin, redshanks and grey plovers. See container ships moving in and out of the busy Harwich International Port and finish in historic Harwich, home of Christopher Jones, Master of the Mayflower. See the restored Electric Palace cinema built in 1911, and the splendid Napoleonic Redoubt Fort.
