The New River Line

Broxbourne to Hertford East

For Rye House, St Margaret’s, Ware and Hertford

The ‘New River Line’ follows the course of several waterways between Broxbourne and Hertford East including the New River (a water supply aqueduct completed in 1613 to bring drinking water from Hertfordshire to North London) and the River Lea, giving access to many nature reserves, beautiful landscapes and leisure opportunities. Escape the hustle and bustle and head out to peaceful wild areas, interesting walks and fun attractions. Look out for the rare Bittern and other wild birds at Great Amwell (from St Margaret’s station) or the RSPB reserve at Rye House. Discover the Lee Valley Country Park from Broxbourne where you can hire a boat, enjoy a ramble on foot or by bike along the towpath that follows the entire line to Hertford East. There are many attractions along the line to enjoy such as the independent shops and cafes at Ware, the Castle and Blue Plaque trail at Hertford, or for the more adventurous, go-karting at Rye House.
