What we are doing to keep you safe:
- We're continuing to clean and sanitise our trains and stations
- Ventilation – air conditioning on all our new trains and some old trains sucks in fresh air every six to nine minutes. Other trains have opening windows. On all trains, doors opening at stations lets more air in.
Try walking down the platform or train, as there are often fewer people further down the train.
If you are still nervous about travelling on busier trains, you can use our less busy trains tool on our website for help with finding a train with fewer passengers.
If you’re at the station, a member of staff will be able to advise you about a quieter alternative. If you’re at an unstaffed station just press the help button on the ticket machine and one of our customer service staff at Norwich will be able to advise you.
We’d like you to carry on wearing a face covering if you can when you’re on busy trains and stations, please. Government advice is still to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed places.
Thank you to all our customers who wear their face coverings when travelling with us. It’s a simple way for us all to keep each other safe.
For full information on latest face coverings advice, visit the Government's website.
- We're cleaning and sanitising our trains and stations, paying particular attention to high touch areas such as push buttons, door handles and grab rails.
- We're carrying out turnaround cleaning inside trains at terminus stations throughout the day. This includes high touch point areas such as grab rails and washroom surfaces.
- We’re using fogging guns with a fine mist of disinfectant for train cleaning in depots.
Yes, we have hand sanitiser available at all staffed stations and we're keeping soap and water topped up in our toilets on stations and trains so you can wash your hands. It’s a good idea to carry your own small bottle of hand sanitiser with you.
Practising good hygiene will help yourself and others.
We continue high levels of cleaning and paying attention to high touch areas on our vehicles. When appropriate, we have created a ‘bubble’ around our drivers in order to reduce their own risk and the risk of all passengers on the rail replacement bus. In some cases, operators have even installed clear barriers to reduce risk.
All travellers are encouraged to wear face coverings on rail replacement.

Customer Review
“Quick and easy journey” - London Liverpool Street to Southend Airport
4 stars - George Ramsey - September 2nd 2019
I needed to travel to Southend Airport for my flight to Barcelona. On the day of travel, I was rather excited to get on the plane and get my holiday started. Luckily, I live on the District and Circle line, so it was easy to jump on the tube to get to Liverpool Street station. My friend had recommended that I get the Greater Anglia app to avoid the crowds once in Central London, and I must admit, that was some great advice. Me and my wife were travelling together - I downloaded both the train tickets on my phone, this was a major time saver and meant there was no stress about losing the tickets either.
London Liverpool always seems quite busy, so my advice to other travellers is to leave some time to navigate the station, get your tickets if you need to, find your platform and find your seat before the train departs. The main tube exit into the station brings you to roughly the centre of the long narrow station concourse. There are shops like WHSmith, Oliver Bonas on the ground floor and other restaurants and cafes like LEON on the balcony floor above it.
Having the ticket on my phone all ready to go meant I had time to get a drink from M&S for my journey to the airport. As we were actually running ahead of time for a change, we managed to board the train just as our platform was announced on the big information boards. This allowed us to secure some much-needed space for our suitcases
We managed to find seats that were opposite to each other and got comfy for our journey ahead. The journey would only take around 50 minutes or so, so we didn’t need iPads and things to keep us occupied.
The journey itself was hiccup-free, comfortable and easy. There were no loud or disruptive people in our carriage, which meant me and my wife would sip our drinks and get excited about our week in Spain, all while travelling through the sunny Essex countryside.
Once we got to Southend Airport train station, getting to the actual airport was simpler than I thought. You just go through the ticket barriers, cross the road and you’re at the airport. Only took a couple of minutes from getting off the train to getting in the queue to check in our bags! I must say that travelling from London to the airport was a seamless experience and one that I would do again!
